High Level Panel "Education: a Key Driver for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Development"
Global Campaign for Education, Education International, International Council for Adult Education and Open Society Foundations held this discussion on education that contribute to the Open Working Group's deliberations on the new framework and goals for sustainable development post 2015
The Global Campaign for Education (GCE), Education International (EI), International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) and the Open Society Foundations (OSF) held a high level panel discussion on education and sustainable development to contribute to the Open Working Group's deliberations on the new framework and goals for sustainable development. This event will take place on the February 6th, at 18:30 in the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York.
This High Level Panel discussion could highlight education’s critical role in sustainable development, and explore examples of its specific contribution to tackling significant development challenges including the topics currently under discussion at the 8th Session of the Opening Working Group - gender equality, social equity, and peace.
Shaping a development framework that can address the challenges of the 21st century is vital. The new sustainable development goals need to deliver the transformative change essential for achieving peaceful and equitable sustainable development.
Education has an unique role within the new development agenda. It has the power to underpin transformative change, providing opportunity, hope and protection to the lives of hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Education empowers individuals, strengthens communities and helps fuel development; a fundamental human right in itself, it unlocks other rights leading to significantly improved indicators for other major development areas, including poverty eradication, gender equality, health, security, conflict reduction and good governance.
A Standalone Goal on Education. The organisers of this event welcome the recognition that OWG gives to education in its Interim Report. The report states that ‘Education is absolutely central to any development agenda’ and as such, calls for education to be strongly reflected in the new sustainable development goals as a fully articulated standalone goal, and also as a cross cutting mechanism for achieving sustainable development in the years to come.
It is only through a broad and bold education agenda that the transformational potential of education harnessed for all, including women and girls, and for the broader development agenda. Below, you have the panel invitation.
